NORWEGIAN PRESENCE: A dialogue on innovation in the design and production process

“Norwegian Presence”, a long-term commitment to the internationalization of Norwegian furniture and interior design at Salone del Mobile in Milan, is going to be introduced to the Chinese design industry, for the first time at Design Shanghai 2020. The Norwegian stand at Design Shanghai is initiated by the Norwegian Consulate General in Shanghai, in consultation with Design and Architecture Norway (DoGA). Selected Norwegian designers and manufactures from the “Norwegian Presence” this year will be presented at Stand C136, speaking for the best of Norwegian contemporary design and products.

Today, the designers’ task is to create meaning from the things we already have, and to find new ways of using and reusing the resources available to us. We have to limit carbon consumption and design towards a circular economy. Design and Architecture Norway (DOGA) and Klubben are very happy to contribute to Design Shanghai by bringing you “Norwegian Presence”, a showcase of the best of Norway’s creative talent. This exhibition shines a spotlight on the designers and manufacturers blazing a trail in the realms of circular production and sustainable design thinking.

Norwegian Presence was originally developed for the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy. The curatorial team, Marit Haugen from Oslo-based architects Haugen/Zohar and Benedicte Sunde of DOGA, has selected 10 of the nation’s designers who are developing intriguing new applications for natural lower- carbon materials such as wood, aluminium, stone and paper.

Together with these 10 designers, 7 environmentally conscious Norwegian manufacturers have also been selected to participate in Norwegian Presence. Each one of these organisations understands that it is a part of something bigger than itself, that, when it comes to society and the challenges we face, we are all in this together.

Following the recent pandemic outbreak, Norwegian Presence had to find new ways to reach out. So for 2020 Norwegian Presence has gone digital, including launching the exhibition on both web and social media platforms, allowing the talented designers and their sustainable prototypes to reach potential manufacturers, gallerists or retailers all over the globe, and allowing the forward-thinking manufacturers to reach the new markets with their focus on sustainable design.
