The Design Philosophy of Returning to Material Thinking

Re = Return
As a biennial curated feature, Re: Materialize returns in 2027 with a renewed focus on material-led innovation and the future possibilities of making. Rooted in the belief that material thinking should begin at the earliest stage of the design process, the exhibition continues to champion the forward-looking concept of “material-driven design.” Through the re-examination, reinterpretation and inventive application of materials, it invites designers to reconnect with the essence, performance and emotional value of materials, inspiring more sustainable, imaginative and future-facing creative practices.

Jointly initiated by Rong Design Library and Design Shanghai, the 2027 edition brings together interdisciplinary artists, designers and material pioneers from diverse fields to present material-centric works inspired by emerging trends and evolving conversations around materials. The exhibition spans traditional craft materials, architectural and interior surfaces, soft furnishings, fashion textiles, sustainable innovations and advanced industrial materials — offering a dynamic exploration of how materials can shape the next chapter of design.
