Installations

background

At Design Shanghai 2026, the event takes on a more pronounced artistic presence, fully activating the venue’s distinctive spatial structure. Through a curatorial approach, circulation routes and spatial dynamics are reimagined, seamlessly integrating indoor exhibitions with outdoor public spaces to create a fluid and immersive spatial experience.

A series of large-scale installations and experiential works are introduced across the site, spanning contemporary art, collectible design, craft, and material experimentation. These works go beyond static presentation, instead functioning as spatial interventions that reshape how visitors move through, perceive, and engage with the environment.

Diverse media and creative languages are brought into dialogue with architectural forms, where materiality, texture, and structure interact to form layered visual and sensory encounters. Each installation contributes to a broader narrative in which design becomes both a physical and emotional experience.

Together, these elements construct a dynamic and atmospheric environment, where art and design are embedded within space rather than simply displayed within it. Set within a seasonal spring context, the exhibition transforms into an evolving spatial journey—one in which design is not only observed, but actively experienced, felt, and embodied through movement and presence.

WEAVING NATURE

Centered on the concept of natural symbiosis, Hu Yuehua’s textile installation constructs a vibrant “second nature” through the use of natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, velvet, and satin. Integrating traditional techniques—including indigo dyeing, pleating, patchwork, folding, and stitching—the work artistically interweaves elements like fungi, plants, mountains, rocks, and water into a cohesive visual language.

QUEST FOR URBAN SIGNALS

Artist Shuaruoshizhu, from Liangshan in Sichuan, undertook an in-depth residency in Shanghai—a city of steel and density. Drawing on the primal sensibilities shaped by the mountains, he uses painting, the body, and mixed media as his means of expression. Through interactions with space and people, he maps the “folds of the wilderness” onto the “texture of the city.”

SHIMMERING ISLE

ZENHO constructed an “iceberg” in the outdoor space - monumental in presence yet restrained in expression, carrying a subtle warmth beneath its cool exterior. The brand’s signature fabrics envelop the structure, using soft textures to wrap rigid forms, allowing light and shadow to gently flow across the textile surface. It evokes the sensation of ocean waves frozen within ice, while wind is softly kept at bay, creating a space that is both introspective and quietly dynamic
