"Beyond Craft," launched by Design Shanghai in 2024, focuses on the contemporary value of traditional craftsmanship. It aims to build a bridge for in-depth exchange and cross-disciplinary innovation, targeting architecture and interior design professionals as well as discerning consumers.
By 2026, the section will bring together diverse creations from over ten brands, including modern categories such as jewelry, objects, furniture, precision components, and optical devices. These works encompass traditional handmade techniques like Nishijin-ori weaving, gold leaf application, lacquer art, washi paper, braided cords, ceramics, glass engraving, and metal inlay. From material selection and structural conception to surface treatment, the hands of artisans and artists vividly interpret the continuity and renewal of traditional crafts in a contemporary context.
