The Design Philosophy of Returning to Material Thinking

Re = Return
"Re: Materialize," a materials aesthetics trend exhibition, aims to advocate for a return to material-oriented thinking at the early stages of design, emphasizing the forward-thinking concept of "material-driven design." By re-examining and innovatively utilizing materials, the exhibition encourages designers to focus on the essence and potential of materials during the creative process, fostering sustainable and imaginative design practices.

Jointly initiated by Rong Design Library and Design Shanghai, the exhibition invites interdisciplinary artists, designers, and material producers from various fields to create material-centric works inspired by the three main themes of the 2025/26 Materials Trend Report. The scope spans traditional handcrafted materials, architectural and interior materials, soft furnishings, fashion fabrics, sustainable materials, and industrial materials.

Present Optimism

Present Optimism

Embracing an uncertain future with a spirit of optimism, this theme focuses on finding harmony and contentment within the details of everyday life. Rather than dwelling on the past or anxiously anticipating the future, design seeks to cultivate a genuine sense of happiness in the present moment.

Nostalgic Shelter

Nostalgic Shelter

Exploring the intersection of memory and imagination, this theme reflects how visions of the future are often infused with nostalgia for ancient memories. Design becomes an emotional thread that weaves through time, linking the past with what is yet to come. It examines the aesthetic tension between futuristic materials and the primal substances of the Earth.

Harmonic Connection

Harmonic Connection

Confronted with urgent global challenges such as climate change, the threat of war, and an ageing population, design must transcend mere aesthetic expression. This theme advocates for the harmonious coexistence of humans, nature, and multiple species. It calls on designers to address contemporary issues with responsibility, pragmatism, and creativity.

2024 Labs

2024 Rong·Traditional Material Lab

2024 Rong·Traditional Material Lab

Rong presents at Design Shanghai with three major material trend themes: "Sensory Function," "Material Planet," and "Quiet Technology." This presentation will blend material research incorporating traditional craftsmanship with CMF (color, material, finish) trend research, exploring the relationship between traditional and future design. By combining traditional materials with experimental creative materials, Rong aims to interpret future trends in style, color, texture, and pattern.
