Coral-like, Lightweight Cultural Tourism Practice
19/03/2026
What is 'coral-like growth'? In our practice, says Slow Coral principal Jinglei Xu, it represents an organic, incremental, and sustainable design strategy. He systematically outlines the practice’s evolution—from a 'giant vessel' to a 'light craft', from 'concealment' to 'coexistence'. Lightweight intervention: respecting the site’s natural texture and integrating new design with precision and minimal disruption. Symbiotic creation: like the relationship between coral and algae, we aim for new design to form mutually beneficial bonds with existing contexts—between old and new, culture and commerce, past and future. Sustained accumulation: the value of design builds up over time, layer by layer, ultimately forming a vibrant and unique ecological whole.
